Nils Dardel – Artist and Dandy

20 March – 12 September 2027

In spring and summer 2027, Prince Eugen´s Waldemarsudde presents a major exhibition devoted to Nils Dardel (1888–1943), one of the most fascinating artists of Swedish modernism. Drawing on significant loans, works from the museum’s own collection, and new research, the exhibition offers an in-depth exploration of Dardel’s innovative artistic practice, his extensive network of artists, gallerists, collectors and cultural figures, his international career, and his colourful life.

The exhibition features around 100 works, primarily paintings and drawings, as well as rarely exhibited studies and sketches for stage sets and costumes created for the Ballets Suédois in Paris, together with sketches for the decorative painting of the Fairy Tale Room (Sagorummet) at Stockholm Public Library.

Through iconic works, unique archival material and historical photographs, the exhibition sheds light on Dardel’s close connections to the art worlds of both Paris and Sweden, as well as his carefully cultivated public persona as a dandy. Together, these elements create a rich portrait of an artist whose multifaceted visual world continues to captivate audiences today.
