Wonderful Colour – Gothenburg Colourism in a New Light
October 3, 2026 – February 28, 2027
During the 1930s, the Gothenburg Colourists flourished in a vibrant form of colour expressionism unlike anything else in Swedish painting. Through bold hues, lively brushwork, and a striking sensitivity to light and atmosphere, the Gothenburg Colourists created a visionary and emotionally charged body of work that continues to resonate through its intensity and presence.
In these paintings, Gothenburg, human figures, and the landscapes of Sweden’s west coast are transformed into vibrant visual worlds filled with colour, movement, and deeply personal expression. Here we encounter artists such as Åke Göransson, Ivan Ivarson, Nils Nilsson, Karin Parrow, Ragnar Sandberg, Märta Taube-Ivarson, and Inge Schiöler alongside both their predecessors and successors. New perspectives shed light on an artistic movement that has long been both celebrated and mythologised — captivating generations of viewers.
The exhibition has been organised in collaboration with the Gothenburg Museum of Art.
